Head of Marketing - NFRN

The National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) is a trade membership organisation representing more than 15,000 independent retailers across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. They are now also expanding their offering into the general independent retail channel, including convenience stores, coffee shops and book shops. The organisation is prospering.


A vacancy has arisen for a Head of Marketing. This is a new role to provide strategic marketing support to the organisation and it reports directly to the new CEO. The job holder will be expected to take day to day charge of the marketing function in its entirety, including three direct reports and comprising a team of eight.

NFRN are looking for candidates to have a good level of people management experience so they can immediately win the trust and respect of their new team.


The NFRN marketing message is aimed at existing retail members, as well as being aimed at potential new retail members. The message needs to engage and to demonstrate value to both. 

NFRN however also do significant B2C work communicating with shoppers directly to persuade them to stay local and shop local.
Candidates will therefore need to be familiar and experienced with B2B & B2C marketing techniques.

NFRN are looking for a seasoned marketer here with experience of the whole range of modern marketing tools such as social media, digital marketing techniques, web content, SEO, PR, marketing communications, advertising, branding, target marketing and segmentation, data analysis etc. Candidates should be experienced in both Above the Line and Below the Line marketing techniques.

NFRN will show preference towards a senior marketing person from a background that has a similar proposition; the obvious one being from other membership organisations, but also from other similar types of organisations where the marketing mix relies on both B2B and B2C methods eg Member Organisations, Symbol Groups, Franchisors, Buying Groups, Professional Membership Organisations, Trade Membership Organisations.

That said, they are also very happy to consider Senior Marketing professionals with in depth Marketing knowledge and experience as long as that experience has covered both B2B and B2C sectors.

This is a Senior Appointment within the NFRN structure. The job holder will enjoy considerable influence within the organisation at a strategic level.
