The Senior Press Officer manages a team to deliver high quality, proactive and reactive media handling and effective communications campaigns that are integrated across channels. An experienced communicator, they are responsible for the quality of the work of the team. They ensure that the team plays its part in the wider Press Office to build the profile of the organisation and drive up public understanding. They will also work with partners across the criminal justice system to build a joined-up approach to communications.

The Senior Press Officer line manages two members of staff, ensuring their work is high quality; allocating work appropriately and ensuring that equality and diversity issues are given proper consideration; ensuring that all staff have undertaken professional development and training

The postholder will be responsible and accountable for all decision-making within their team. They will be responsible for ensuring staff and resources are deployed flexibly and effectively to manage a fluctuating workload and emerging priorities. They will provide expert professional advice on media handling to senior leaders, including the Director and Chief Executive, on media and reputational issues.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the below: -
* Review communication and media plans to ensure activities reflect the priorities of the department and senior leaders
* Initiate and lead the development of both reactive and proactive integrated media campaigns that build on insight and tracking data
* Demonstrate excellent written communication skills and set standards for communication
* Provide overall editorial control to ensure appropriate content, messaging, tone and consistency in all communication
* Evaluate the effectiveness of communication against objectives.
* Review lessons learnt and compare with industry best practice to identify areas for improvement.
* Effectively capture, utilise and share customer insight and views from a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure better policy and delivery
* Consider the cumulative impact on own business area of implementing change
* Be visible to staff and stakeholders and regularly undertake activities to engage and build trust with people involved in area of work
* Clarify plans, giving clear sense of direction and purpose of self and team
* Confidently engage with stakeholders and colleagues at all levels to generate commitment to goals
* Actively build and maintain a network of colleagues and contacts to achieve progress on objectives and shared interests
* Actively involve partners to deliver a business outcome through collaboration
* that achieves better results for citizens
* Seek constructive outcomes in discussions, challenge assumptions but remain willing to compromise when it is beneficial to progress
* You will be used to working under pressure dealing with various high profile media campaigns all at the same time
* Highly experienced in communicating to journalists and broadcasters
* Experience of pro-active and Re-active press
* Ideally you will have worked in CJS media environment - police/prisons/courts etc. Or have relevant Government experience
