Are you a senior, strategic marketing expert? Would you like to head up a sector-leading team, working on some of the highest profile health marketing campaigns in England?

Head of Marketing Strategy and Planning

We are looking for a marketing expert to lead our high-performing team, delivering strategic work on Public Health England’s prestigious behaviour change campaigns. The right candidate will be an experienced and convincing professional who can demonstrate strategic insight, passion for their work, and a sound grasp of data, analytics and evaluation. You will have the capability to navigate complex approvals systems and the personal authority and gravitas to influence at the highest level.

This isn’t a typical role and we aren’t looking for a typical candidate. You might currently be working in a senior/leadership role in the public, private or not-for-profit environment. You will have a strong record of successful line management, and have been responsible for leading teams, peers and senior stakeholders towards sound strategic conclusions. You will probably have over ten years’ experience in marketing, strategy, evaluation, or research; what matters is the skills and dynamism you bring to your work.

In return we can offer you a job where what you do makes a difference at a national level. Every day you’ll work on new challenges in a fast-paced and supportive environment. You will lead the thinking and define the strategy for our work on the most important public health challenges, including obesity, smoking, cancer and mental health. You will be responsible for the strategy, insight and evaluation of major health marketing campaigns, such as Change4Life, Stoptober, Be Clear on Cancer, One You and Stroke Act Fast.

As one of two Heads of Strategy and Planning in the department, you will ensure that behaviour change theory, data and intelligence, the latest marketing practice, and deep insight into your target audience is at the heart of powerful, participative marketing interventions.

Open to all external applicants (anyone) from outside the Civil Service (including by definition internal applicants).

Applicants are strongly advised to:

  • Use the criteria in the person specification (available online) as sub-headings in their application to make it clear how they meet each of the selection criteria, including required competencies, which are included at the back of the job description.
  • Demonstrate their experience of strategy development, insight and evaluation in the context of marketing campaigns.

If you would like an informal discussion about the role in advance of your application please contact Namo.Ata@phe.gov.uk to arrange a conversation.
