Job Description

  • This role drives and manages Internal Communications (IC) for Shell’s Global Retail business. It is responsible for engaging and inspiring employees within the Retail business across the world, with the aim of driving business performance.
  • It is an exciting time to join the Retail business as it experiences a period of growth and expansion. Retail is a business that is re-inventing itself on every level to service its customers and society better.
  • The Retail business is highly dynamic and fast paced. There will be ample opportunities for the role to communicate about the cutting-edge products and services that are being developed in the business to inspire and motivate employees.
  • This role works directly with the Retail Executive Vice President (EVP) and Retail Leadership Team – advising and coaching these leaders in delivering effective employee engagement and dialogue.
  • The key objectives for this role are: to connect staff with the Retail strategy to ensure each employee understands their contribution to the business’s success; to connect leaders with staff at all levels to strengthen employee engagement and motivation and drive a high performance culture; and to connect the Retail business with the external world and customers.

Accountabilities include:

  • Develops, owns and delivers the Internal Communications Strategy for the global Retail business.
  • Responsible for the delivery of key internal communications activities including EVP quarterly notes, Retail EVP New Year/End of Year messages, leadership webcasts, EVP staff engagements.
  • Develops and delivers the IC aspects of the annual Business Plan Cascade - ensuring an engaging and informative series of global events.
  • Develops strong knowledge of Retail's strategic business priorities, challenges and narrative and how these connect with/contribute to Shell’s Group and Downstream strategy.
  • Builds a strong and collaborative relationship with the External Relations team, Human Resources and Strategy; in order to maintain an integrated and aligned communications approach for the business.
  • Builds a strong relationship with the Retail EVP and associated LT members and demonstrates deep knowledge and affinity for their business priorities.
  • Manage and maximise global Retail internal communication channels e.g. MyNews, Quarterly EVP messages and effectively advocate and maximise Retail content and stories in global Shell IC channels available.
  • Looks for opportunities to trial leading edge Internal communication tactics to inspire and engage employees.
  • Advises and coaches business leaders to become more effective at employee engagement and dialogue.
  • Applies strategic measurement analysis and advice across the business and in coaching/counselling business leaders.

Requirements

  • Senior communications professional with significant experience in developing, managing and executing strategic communications in support of business objectives
  • Preference for strong experience in internal communications, balanced by supporting experience in other disciplines or specialties of communications - marketing, public relations or journalism.
  • Strong English writing skills.
  • Proven track record in securing the trust of senior leaders and contributing as a business partner, counsellor and adviser, and/or experience in an agency or consultancy as an account director or client-relationship manager
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver successfully through others, influence without authority, build collaborative relationships focused on shared outcomes and maintain a high level of emotional intelligence
  • Proven capabilities to deliver under time pressures and shifting priorities
  • Attention to detail, strong organisation and project management skills, ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines are essential.
  • Demonstrating strong ability to learn the business quickly and to become a trusted functional partner.
  • Experience in developing highly engaging and creative content which has a powerful impact with audiences. Confidence in trialling new and engaging tactics.
