The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is one of the UK's leading environmental organisations. It is an education provider, venue, think tank and visitor attraction promoting practical solutions to sustainability. CAT has a long history as a pioneer of the green movement and seeks to provide innovative education and thought leadership on solutions to environmental challenges.
CAT is based in Mid Wales with a global outlook and a customer base across the UK and beyond. CAT is a registered charity with a turnover of around £3m, around a third of which is from fundraising (mainly from its membership and supporter base).
CAT is also a limited company and two thirds of its income is from educational fees and trading. Its largest income stream is higher education, with smaller business areas in short courses, schools education, day visitors and venue/accommodation. It also has a café, which is used by customers across its business streams, and a shop (on site and mail order).
CAT is currently going through a period of turnaround and change which involves renewing infrastructure across the organisation, introducing a clearer management structure and developing a new business model and strategic plan. Central to this is the need to introduce a product development function and rationalise the organisation's commercial offer to support income growth, with a particular focus on CAT's role as a venue and its education provision.
CAT's marketing function is currently focused on promotion, with a strong focus on higher education including sales for that area of the business. Product development and pricing currently takes places within departments with no systematic organisation-wide overview.
CAT's name is well known within the green movement in the UK and beyond and the organisation is frequently approached with opportunities to scale up its educational and think tank work to other sites and organisations. Outline arrangements for potential collaborations are in place with a few other institutions but work is needed to ensure that the right commercial arrangements are agreed to support this.
The post will report to the CEO. It is intended that the post holder will not have formal line management responsibilities in order to enable an organisation-wide strategic focus.
Detailed Job Description
Support the CEO in concluding a process of reviewing the organisation's strategic objectives, market position and mission.
Work with the CEO and Finance Director to develop a business model to support the refreshed strategy and efficient running of the organisation.
Support the Senior Management Team in honing the organisation's offer relating to its smaller revenue streams and site-based activity.
Working across the organisation, review CAT's approach to product development, pricing and margins to support short and long term growth in line with mission.
Working closely with the marketing team and across the organisation, review CAT's current approach to marketing, sales and business processes and make recommendations for future structure.
Identify and drive forward short-term objectives for commercial income growth.
Support the CEO in reviewing business development and partnership opportunities.
Put in place systems for formalising business development and partnerships opportunities, including consideration of models and agreements for scaling up CAT's educational and outreach work.
Support the Head of Development in ensuring that CAT's redeveloped website maximises income opportunities.
As part of the Senior Management Team for this interim period, support the ongoing cultural and financial turnaround of the organisation.
Development of the brand in the UK and profiling of the company on a national, local and industry level.

CAT is seeking a candidate with a background in product development in the commercial world.
The ideal candidate would have an all-round experience in marketing and business development from different sectors.
Hospitality/venue, followed by higher education, have been identified as the areas of greatest untapped commercial potential in the organisation, while scaling up through partnerships is seen as having significant longer term potential.
A relevant third level qualification preferably in Marketing or Business related discipline.
5-10 year's experience in a senior marketing position.
Experience of aligning products to audiences.
Experience of setting setting pricing and margins.
A real passion and interest in marketing.
Proven experience in working in all aspects of marketing.
Strong Digital Marketing background.
Strong influencing and negotiation skills.
Proven ability to make impactful, strategic decisions
Strong organisational and planning skills.
